The Wines of Tuscany
Dear
Friends,
During a
trip to Tuscany it is impossible not to mention wines seeing as our land
produces some of the finest and most recognizable wines in the world.
Therefore, it forms a fundamental part of the culture of our land.
You must
know that in Tuscany there are thousands and thousands of small wine producers
accounting for nearly 15% of all Italian wine production which is one of the
largest in the world.
1. CastelloBanfi (Brunello)
We begin
with the area of Brunello (which wins many awards each year and is considered
the best red wine in the world) and I recommend a visit to the Castello Banfi.
Castello Banfi not only offers guided tours of their vineyards but also has an
excellent restaurant inside the castle situated within the vineyards and where
you can taste their exquisite wines alongside excellent tradition Tuscan
dishes. You can complete your visit with a walk around Montalcino.
2.
Fonterutoli (Chianti)
A few km
from Siena in the heart of Chianti Classico is where you will find the wine
Fonterutoli. Vineyards and the village of Fonterutoli can be visited by appointment.
The wineries are modern and the wines produced are spectacular. The wines which
Fonterutoli produce are among my favorites.
3. Redi(Nobile di Montepulciano)
In the
center of Montepulciano there is one of the oldest wine cellars in Tuscany. These
wineries that still retain their medieval appearance are definitely the most
impressive that I have ever visited. The visit does not require an appointment
and access is from the town center of Montepulciano. At the end of the visit
you can taste some excellent Nobile wines that for quality for price are among
the best in Tuscany.
4.
Sassicaia
A few km
from the town of Bolgheri near the sea is this small wine producing company,
which is the most awarded wine in Tuscany and the most famous in the world,
Sassicaia. The bottles of this wine can cost absurd amounts and is sold only in
the best restaurants in the world. On market value Sassicaia is an excellent
wine and wine lovers should visit this shrine to wine at least once.
5. LeCapezzine
A few km
from the famous Cortona in the middle of Val di Chiana is this beautiful winery
that produces excellent red and white wines. The setting is beautiful and the
Villa where the wines are produced. You may visit their vineyards but an appointment
is required. The Avignonesi wines are certainly among the best red wines of
Tuscany and they produce excellent Nobile wines (noble wines or Nobile as it is
called in Italy is a wine that has been selected for aging and it has to be
more than two years in the barrel).
