The 10 Best Beaches in Tuscany

Dear Friends,

After receiving a lot of mail regarding the beaches in Tuscany I have decided to write an article informing you on those of which from my point of view may be considered as the top ten beaches of Tuscany.

1 – La Paolina en la Isla de Elba

This beach is found in La Isla de Elba just 2km from the little village of Procchio and is a beach mixed with sand and small stones. The beach was christened Paolina in honour of the sister of Napoleon who was imprisoned on this island. This small beach can be reached by a steep path 200m from the road or around 20 minutes in Kayak from the beach of Procchio.
In my opinion this is the most beautiful beach in Tuscany for its beauty and crystal clear waters.

2 – Cala Gesso Monte Argentario

A few kilometers from Porto Santo Stefano in Monte Argentario in southern Tuscany you will find some of the best beaches in Tuscany. It’s hard to say which the best is because this piece of coast of Tuscany is really very beautiful, but certainly one of the most beautiful beaches is Playa Gesso. Paolina beach is difficult to access and therefore unwise to families with young children. You can reach this cove by sea or by a fairly steep path down the road. In Cala there are no services of any kind but its beauty makes up for everything in abundance.

3 – La Giannella – Orbetello

A couple of kilometers from Argentario is Gianella beach. This beach is located in the bay of Orbetello which for years is a WWF Oasis. The waters of the sea at this point are the cleanest in the Mediterranean. This is a sandy beach where you can eat and rent chairs and umbrellas. The beach is ideal for families with children. For people with a passion for walking along the beach this is extremely ideal.

4 - Cala di San Francesco – Capraia

Capraia is another island that is near the Tuscan coast which is easily reached from Livorno. The island which hardly knows tourism is still wonderfully wild. You can only access most beaches on the island by boat although Grotta Beach (near the port) and San Francesco are reachable on foot. San Francesco is very close to the convent which gives it its name and they have relative access so it is not advisable if you have young children. As I said before the best way to see the famous beaches like Cala Rossa of this island is definitely by boat.

5 – Follonica - Grosseto

On the Tuscan coast, easily reachable from Siena or Florence is the Follica beach which is undoubtedly one of the best on the Tuscan coast. Follonica offers miles and miles of beautiful free beach. On the East side I will point out Cala Violina (the cove which is pictured) and Cala delle Civette and of course the most wild of these small bays of this zone is Cala del Barbiere. Each of these are relatively easy to reach from the road and ideal to visit with family and kids.

6 – PuntaAla – Grosseto

The beach Punta Ala is located in Castiglione della Pescaia and is easily reached from the major cities of Tuscany. This appears numerous times in the Blue Guide as one of the cleanest beach areas of Italy and is certainly one of the most beautiful beaches in Tuscany. On a visit to Punta Ala you can also visit places of historical interest such as the Hidalgo Tower or the Torre degli Appiani.

7 – Talamone – Grosseto

In southern Tuscany near to Argentario is this small town with an impressive castle which once functioned as a defense against pirates. With rock and sand beaches Talamone is ideal for sports sailing. Talamone area is in the middle of a natural reserve so it is relatively easy to find animals such as boars and deer. The town is very characteristic and offers excellent restaurants serving fresh fish.

8 – Le Rocchette – Grosseto

For lovers of camping, Le Rocchete is the ideal place to enjoy the sea in Tuscany. This beach is one of the most beautiful campsites in Tuscany. The beach sand is basically a pine forest that practically reaches the sea providing shade and cool on the hottest summer days. The beach comes to a rocky area where you can snorkel and enjoy the marine life.

Another very nice beach is near some Etruscan ruins and a few kilometers from the village of San Vincenzo is the beautiful beach of Baratti. This sandy beach is also filled with pine trees which almost reach the sea and is ideal for families with children, as it is easily accessible and has rock pools. On the beach there are some beach bars to eat or rent chairs and umbrellas. Near the beach are the Etruscan ruins, a former Roman civilization that lived in this area of Tuscany over 2500 years ago.

For lovers of nightlife with good restaurants and aesthetics, Forte dei Marmi offers a beach with many amenities. In recent years, this beach is a frequent destination for rich Russians who come with their boats to enjoy the more VIP area of Tuscany. Personally I do not find its beaches very beautiful but I could not help mention it seeing as since the 70s it is one of the most popular seaside resorts in Tuscany. A peculiarity of these beaches are the beautiful Apuan Alps (mountain range) that can be seen easily from the beach.
